The 2016 Volvo XC90 will only be sold with four-cylinder engines, all in the name of fuel efficiency. And with the new 2016 XC90 set to roll into showrooms this summer, the EPA has revealed fuel economy figures for the XC90 T6 with all-wheel drive.

For now, the T6 serves as the base model and features a 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged I-4 that makes 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic takes on shifting duties. That said, the XC90 T6?s powertrain returns an EPA-rated 20/25/22 mpg city/highway/combined.

The outgoing XC90 and its 240-hp 3.2-liter inline-six was rated at 16/23/18 mpg. When it comes to competitors, the 2016 Volvo XC90 appears to be more efficient in the city, but is thirstier on the highway. The 2015 Infiniti QX60 AWD, for example, is rated at 19/26/22 mpg, while the all-wheel-drive Acura MDX returns 18/27/21 mpg. Both the Infiniti and Acura are powered by V-6 engines, which appear to have the advantage over the Volvo on highway treks.

The EPA has yet to release figures on the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid. That model also features a twin-charged 2.0-liter engine along with an electric motor at the rear axle for a combined output of around 400 hp and 472 lb-ft. Volvo says the XC90 T8 PHEV will travel 25 miles in pure EV mode and should go on sale in the U.S. this fall.
